OSU ChE Students' FE Exam Performance
|
|
July 2008 |
|
We
track the pass rate on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam
as one of our performance measures of the OSU ChE undergraduate
program, and are very proud of our students’ performance.
The FE exam is a comprehensive test of
competence in engineering and science, and passing it is the
first step toward registering as a professional engineer. The
test is administered twice nationally, by the National Council
of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. All students take
the same test on the same day. Nationally, the pass rate for
chemical engineering students has recently averaged about 85%.
Our over 90% pass rate is one clear indication of excellence in
the OSU ChE students, faculty, and staff. The graph presents a
10-year history of a 3-year moving average of the pass-rate for
test takers currently enrolled in school. Using a 3-year
average provides a large enough sample to temper test-to-test
variability. |

Chetan Chandak Receives ISA Scholarship |
|
July 2008 |
|
Chetan
Chandak, MS candidate in Chemical Engineering was awarded a
$2,000 scholarship from ISA - The Instrumentation, Systems, and
Automation Society.
Chetan will be evaluating several new ideas
related process control and process modeling related to the
practice of process control. His initial assignment is to
explore possible benefits of a new technique in generating
empirical models, and his investigations are indicating that,
when models are nonlinear, it may be better to measure best fit
of equation-to-data by minimizing deviations from data-to-curve
along a normal (perpendicular to the curve) distance, rather
than minimizing vertical distance. Since the control community
uses models in tuning controllers, in inferential measurements,
in model-based control, and in optimization there may be many
opportunities to apply his findings to improve empirical models. |

Renee Hale wins 2008 Goldwater Scholarship |
|
April 2008 |

Congratulations
to Renee Hale, chemical
engineering sophomore who will
be a Goldwater Scholar for the
2008-2009 school year. The
scholarships are awarded by the
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
and Excellence in Education
Foundation, to encourage
outstanding students to pursue
careers in mathematics, the
natural sciences, and
engineering. This year $7,500
scholarships were awarded to 321
of the 1,035 applicants.
Each 4-year college or
university is permitted to
nominate up to four students,
making those who were selected
as a Goldwater Scholar part of a
prestigious community. |
