Graduate Student FAQ

Q. What are the admission deadlines?

A.  The application deadline for applying in the Fall semester is March 1 and the deadline for applying in the Spring semester is October 1. Decisions on completed files will begin as soon as possible. Applicants will be notified by email and in writing upon receipt of their application, and they will be informed of any missing items, which should be provided immediately.

Q. I am interested in receiving financial aid during my studies. Is aid available and if so what types?

A.  We have several types of support available to qualified students in the M.S. and Ph.D. programs. This assistance includes:

•      Fellowships sponsored by industrial supporters of our program; these normally do not require the student to perform any specific service to the School

•      Research Assistantships on a variety of externally support research projects, which permit the student to pursue thesis research on the assistantship

•      Teaching Assistantships for students who assist faculty in classes, performing as graders, lab assistants and/or consultants to the students

Stipends for each type of support are competitive with those provided by other graduate programs in chemical engineering. Students from outside of Oklahoma who are supported on assistantships also receive a waiver of the out-of-state portion of their tuition fees.

Every applicant for admission is automatically considered for financial aid. No separate application form is required. Our policy is to continue to support students throughout their graduate studies, so long as they maintain satisfactory progress toward their degree.

Q. I cannot afford to pay the application fee. Can I defer the fee until I am admitted?

A. We understand the financial difficulties associated with application to graduate programs; however, the $75.00 fee cannot be deferred or waived. The University will not allow an application to be considered unless it is accompanied by the application fee.

Q. I am interested in working with a specific faculty member. Should I send my application directly to them?

A. No, please send all your application materials to the Graduate College.

Q. My undergraduate degree is not in chemical engineering, but I would like to pursue a M.S. or Ph.D. in chemical engineering. What are my chances of being admitted to your program?

A. Admission to the graduate program in chemical engineering at Oklahoma State University is highly competitive. While an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering is not a strict requirement for admission, we expect students to have completed the equivalent of our own undergraduate required curriculum. This may required six to ten undergraduate chemical engineering courses.

Q. I am thinking of applying, but I am worried that my background and qualifications are such that I won’t be accepted. Is there someone I can call who can tell me if I’ll be accepted before I apply?

A. As much as we would like to offer pre-screening, regrettably we do not have the resources to offer this service. Your undergraduate record, performance on the GREs, any undergraduate research experience, letters of recommendation, and your personal statement are all considered in our final decision regarding admission.

Q. Do I need to take a Subject (e.g., Engineering or Chemistry) GRE exam?

A. No.

Q. When should I take the GRE?

A. This depends on which semester you are applying for admission and when tests are given in your area. Please see the GRE website at www.gre.org for more information on when to take the test in your area. These scores are required for your application so you should ensure that you take the test early enough to have them sent at the same time you send in your application.

Q. Are TOEFL scores required for admission?

A. Yes, a minimum score of 550 (paper based), 80 (internet based), and 213 (computer based) is required by the Graduate College.

Q. I will be in town, and I would like to stop by and tour the department. Can I drop in on a few faculty members and research groups at that time?

 A. Please arrange such a visit with the Graduate coordinator.

 Q. When will I find out about the status of my application?

 A. It is critical that all applicants maintain a current and correct email address, so that we can communicate with you via email. You should hear something from us by April 1 for Fall applicants and November 1 for Spring applicants.

 Q. How long does it take to earn an M.S. degree?

 A. The length of time is variable, depending upon the student’s undergraduate background and his or her goals and self-chosen pace of graduate study. Typically, it takes three to four semesters to complete the M.S. requirements.

 Q. How many faculty members do you have?  How long have they been teaching?

 A. Currently, we have 15 professors on faculty, five of which are emeritus. Our faculty has a broad range of experience and emphasis.  For more details, see the faculty web pages.

Q. How do I get further information?

A. Please be sure to explore all information on the department website. If you still have additional questions, please email your questions to Khaled Gasem at gasem@okstate.edu
