News from Chemical Engineering
4th Annual Chem-E-Car Competition
Run! This year, the car had to carry 250 milliliters (about a half-pint) of water and stop closest to a line 70 feet away. The cars are homemade, by teams of students mixed from both sophomore and junior levels. Three of our teams will compete at the AIChE Regional meeting, and hopefully one or more will continue on to national competition. Poster presentation winners Tim Plowman, Ashleigh Hildebrand, and Robert Taylor are shown with faculty advisor Sundar Madihally and Chevron Phillips Plant Manager Gary Allen. Their Trogdor placed third overall, and they will represent us at the Regional competition in Tulsa.
Contest winners J.R. Blose, Anibal Delgado, Matt Thorn, and Daniel Agee shown with faculty advisor Sundar Madihally and Gary Allen. Their car stopped within 9 inches from the finish line, 70 feet away.
The next part of the story . . . One of our ChemE Car Teams placed first in the Regional Competition in Tulsa, April 3, 2004, and will represent us in National Competition at the AIChE Annual Meeting this fall in Austin, Texas.. The car is powered by hydrogen peroxide reacting with pureed beef liver. Who would choose that as a propulsion system? Answer: J. R. Blose, Matt Thorn, Anibal Delgado, Daniel Agee, Raicelina Ramos, David Tree, Samuel Adams, and Clark Manhan. Their car stopped within 6 inches of the finish line.
It
was a close competition. The second place winner, from Kansas State
University, stopped within 1.5 feet, and the third, from the
University of Tulsa, within 5 feet of the finish line. All three
will go to Nationals.
The second best OSU car placed 4th in the competition. Tim Plowman,
Rob Taylor, Ashleigh Hildebrand, Jessica Mack, Kim Northey, Jeremy
Grace, and Brandon Meyers.
