Matt Miskelly Wins 2009-10 Niblack Undergraduate Research Award

John Matthew (Matt) Miskelly is a recent recipient of an $8,000 Niblack Research Scholarship with additional tuition compensation, supporting his work with Dr. Josh Ramsey in bio-chemical engineering for the coming school year and summer.

The Niblack Research Scholars program is offered to sophomores and juniors who wish to better themselves in their future careers by performing research in OSU laboratories.

Matt writes, “My research project will be under the supervision of Dr. Joshua Ramsey and graduate student Ivy Pal of the Chemical Engineering department.  We will be working to find bio-compatible solvents for frankincense oil in the effort to successfully treat bladder cancer.  As a part of my research, I will first do a literature review to identify the properties of a suitable solvent, measure the solubility of frankincense oil in the potential solvents, and measure the toxicity of the solvents when added to cancer infected bladder cells.  I am very excited to perform this study over the next year because it has realistic world relevancy, and could be promising for many ill people in the future - if the research goes well.”

Matt is from Harrah, OK.  He is in the biomedical option of chemical engineering; and enjoys running, playing guitar, snowboarding, and OSU football.  The photo shows him daypacking in downtown Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Congratulations, Matt and Dr. Ramsey.
