Assistant Professor
Materials Science
B.S., 1996, Mechanical Engineering, Oklahoma State University
Ph.D., 2002, Materials Science and Engineering, University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign
Jim joined the faculty at OSU in 2002 after completing his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. A significant portion of his Doctoral research was performed at Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque where Jim was a full time graduate student intern from 1999 to 2002. While at Sandia, Jim worked on a variety of projects that included colloidal processing of ceramics, solid freeform fabrication, piezoelectric devices, and photonic band gap materials. Both Jim and his wife received their undergraduate degrees from OSU and are enthusiastic about their return to Stillwater. Jim’s research interests are in area of materials science. His current projects include synthesis of carbon nanotubes, directed self-assembly of novel colloidal building blocks, solid freeform fabrication of functional ceramics, and synthesis of novel tissue engineering scaffolds. The objectives of these projects are to improve the intrinsic materials properties, understand their processing behavior, and introduce new functionality to materials and devices by novel assembly routes. Dr. Smay enjoys working with his four Ph.D. students as well as undergraduates participating in cutting edge materials research in his group. Jim has been a co-instructor in the Unit Operations Lab and taught the undergraduate Materials Science course.
