R. Russell Rhinehart
Edward E. Bartlett Chair and
Head
BACKGROUND:
Russ joined us in 1997 as Bartlett Chair and School
Head. For 13 years between his MS and Ph.D., he worked in the chemical
industry, and for 12 years prior to joining OSU, he had been a professor at
Texas Tech University.
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Process Control,
Optimization, Modeling, Data Analysis, Simulation, Transport, Kinetics, Unit
Operations Lab, and Design.
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Russ’s research interest is "process control". With the
availability of high performance computers, the field has now evolved to mean
the "automaton of process management." His team is developing methods for
nonlinear control, process optimization, computer perception, learning
systems, autonomous control and statistically based triggers; and they are
complementing theoretical analysis with experimental demonstration. Through
industrial partnerships, many of these techniques have been transferred into
commercial practice. Russ is co-author of the text "Applied Engineering
Statistics," Editor-in-Chief of "ISA Transactions," Treasurer for the
American Automatic Control Council, and a member of several advisory boards. He is a fellow of the
ISA-The Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society.
