Jan Wagner
Professor

BACKGROUND:
Jan has taught many of the undergraduate courses and graduate chemical engineering courses, as well as the engineering science courses in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. He has also been an instructor in short courses on ground water modeling and unsaturated flow offered through the School of Geology and Arts & Sciences Extension
.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Phase Equilibria and Process Safety

Jan and his students have been involved in modeling phase equilibrium in systems of volatile weak electrolytes, strong electrolytes, and light hydrocarbons. The simultaneous solution of chemical and phase equilibrium improves the prediction of phase behavior for volatile, reactive species and describes the salting-out effects light hydrocarbons in aqueous solutions. Experimental activities include the measurement of hydrocarbon-water mutual solubilities. Jan's other interests are process simulation and the use of equations of state for process design. These activities extend to process safety, including the development of teaching materials.
